Communicating with manufacturers I have determined the production of a cork part is prohibitively expensive. Given the number of units I am hoping to produce (150-500) the initial cost for a complex custom mold would eclipse the combined cost of each molded part: resulting in a ridiculous cost for the final product. Despite my efforts to simplify my cork part I was unable to find suppliers willing to go below $2000 for a mold.
Although it's late in the semester, I have gone back to the drawing board to create a wellness object that is more capable of being manufactured with a reasonable budget. With this opportunity I also want to investigate materials that can be recycled with greater ease. Paper, wood, hemp and steel have potential to leave a smaller footprint.
My initial concept is a build it yourself hanging mobile kit that incentivizes the user to reflect on their goals through pensive construction and maintain them through visual reminder.
The user is provided with templates as part of the kit, which they write out their goals on.
Following this, they fold up the form and create a 3d object, fixing it to a string and incorporating it into the mobile. This process is intended to be reflective.
With all of the forms incorporated the user has constructed an object that contains their intentions and provides opportunity for reflection.
Following the completion of their goal the user may be able to dispose of their object through planting it. This seems like the weakest aspect of my concept and I may remove it, but feel free to leave feedback if you disagree.
Following this initial concept I aim to develop additional forms, refine points of connection on the bars, and rethink the planting aspect.
